The Funeral Rule, regulated by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), empowers you to select and pay for only the goods and services you desire or require. This applies whether you’re making arrangements at the time of a death or planning in advance.
Choose only the funeral elements you need. You are entitled to select individual items (like caskets) and services (such as embalming or a memorial service) independently. It’s not necessary to agree to a bundled package that might contain elements you don’t need.
Access pricing details over the phone. Funeral directors are obligated to provide pricing information over the phone upon request. You are not required to disclose your name, address, or phone number to obtain this information. While not mandatory, numerous funeral homes opt to send their price lists by mail, and some even publish them on their websites.
So remember, you do not have to purchase your casket from the funeral home and save money, it’s your choice to do so or not.
