On Tuesday morning I had to alter my running schedule because of rain showers.  So, I took to our indoor treadmill to get my daily exercise and had a nice run while watching the Fox Business Stuart Varney morning show.

One of the short business news stories that came on was that they believed you would see McDonald’s stock “pop” a little on Tuesday because they were introducing meal items and pricing to draw the low-budget consumer in for “Back-to-School” meals.  The hosts of the program also made a point to let viewers know that McDonald’s marketing to the “low-budget” clientele was very different from most products that seem to market to the more affluent audience with more disposable incomes.

I had also just read an article that morning about a potential decline of white collar workers and a potential gain of blue collar workers in the U.S.  because of the expected reshoring of American manufacturing jobs and the expected increase of artificial intelligence in white-collar business use.  That combination made me wonder about the traditional (casketed burial) markets that over the years have been overtaken by cremation choices by consumers.

I grew up in a small community in rural America and remember my father’s words when a new owner took ownership of the other funeral home in town.  That owner seemed to be in the newspaper all the time and was quick to become an active member of the Chamber of Commerce.  My dad made the comment to me at the time when I was in middle school and I still remember it to this day, “Let him wine and dine those people all he wants.  We will be happy taking care of the farmers and blue collar workers and there is a lot more of them”.

Now, my dad was an “old shoe” if there ever was one.  He would not know what a “Cesare Attolini brand” suit was, much less ever wear one.  He once told me that he drove an old American Motors Rambler car because “it was all he needed”.  Yet, he took care of any family that called our funeral home with incredible care, compassion, and credit — and most of our clients were the farm families and the blue-collar worker families that sometimes needed all of those attributes.

I took his quotes and actions to heart and have always believed that “Farm families and blue-collar workers” were the backbone of traditional funeral service.  Of course, in our community they were also the back-bone of the churches and school boards . . . . . . and they believed in the traditions and mores of traditional funeral services.

Here’s an interesting graphic (below) that shows the manufacturing losses in America since what I would call the “Globalization of Manufacturing”.  Maybe it is just coincidental, but the dates of loss of these blue-collar workers somewhat corresponds with the percentage increases in cremation related services in America.

This next graphic (below) shows that America’s Middle Income (Blue-Collar) people have dropped from having an aggregate of 62% of the income in 1970 to only 43% of the income today.  And, as you can see Upper Income Americans now control about 48% of all income — up from about 29% in 1970.  And, the Lower Income tier has stayed relatively stable over the past 50 years.

So, my historic take is, the backbone of traditional funeral service was making, in relative terms, less money while the cost of traditional funeral services was going up.  It should be no surprise that low-cost cremation demand also went up over those years.  I don’t think it should come as any surprise that one traditional funeral home company that has catered to the “cost-conscious” traditional funeral consumer over the years, Newcomer Funeral Group, has seemingly done very well by doing so.

I was also moved during this exercise to find out what do companies appeal to when they “chase the affluent consumer” audience?  I found this short article and lengthier white-paper from Mastercard titled “Reaching new heights:  Understanding the nuances and potential of affluent consumers in a changing market”.

I didn’t read the white-paper but did notice one of the nuances of affluent consumers is that  the affluent consumer likes “new and innovative products”.  The article goes on to state “This influential audience presents unparalleled opportunities for brands ready to adapt and innovate.”

When I go back in history and look at the rise in cremation I would argue that cremation in America was “innovative” in the 1960’s and 1970’s which may be one reason it was adopted by the affluent early on and that the relative financial strength loss of the middle income in the years following (coupled with the increased prices of traditional funerals) both had something to do with the increased level of cremation over the past 4-5 decades.

While many traditional funeral homes fought cremation, there were some really innovative firms that saw the “cremation innovation” and went full-scale into the process.  Many even changed their brand by taking out the words “funeral home” and inserting “cremation”.  Over time, some of the firms that saw the wave and re-branded are some of the largest volume firms in the country today.

Thinking about the future —  If these hypotheses are in any way somewhat correct one would suggest that a company with an innovative Death Care product, such as alkaline hydroysis or natural organic reduction should be looking for the “early adopters” among the affluent members of society.

With Mastercard’s theory that the affluent “like innovation” one would suggest that innovative Death Care companies, and this would include after-market cremation products like Better Place Forests and Parting Stone, would find the most success in affluent zip-code areas.

The title of this article poses what seems to be a simple question.  I don’t think it is.

We recently printed an article that brought attention to the fact that Batesville and Tukios “made a deal” that, at least from my point of view, allowed Batesville to concentrate on its “core” business of caskets, cremation products, and software solutions.  I think it is pretty easy, especially if you are my age, to have the perception that the “core” of Batesville is casket sales and, increasingly, cremation product sales. . . . and, I would argue that most businesses that look to Batesville for solutions, look in those two categories, at least until they get more familiar with the company.

However, when potential clients look to traditional funeral homes  — what is the “core” product or feature that makes them call the funeral home?  What are they looking for? . . . . And, is that item changing as time moves on?`

I think it does change and over time the “core” business of the person taking care of the dead in America has been fluid.  For instance, if you go back to the Old West days of the United States the “core” business of an undertaker was to build a wooden box for the casket, dig the grave, and transport the deceased in the box to the grave.  That’s what people expected when they contacted the “undertaker”.

Eventually, undertakers built facilities and at least part of the “core” business was to provide a “place” for the reception of guests for the grieving family to receive.  During that time, and for the better part of the entire 20th Century, the “core” business also included the funeral home guiding the family through the entire process which included embalming, sale of a casket, the visitation, funeral service, and graveside.  I think it was also hard to define your business “core” at this time on the perception of your clientele.   —  While your business was much more than “selling a casket”, many client families would say “they had to go to a funeral home, not to facilitate the funeral, but to buy a casket”.  In essence, they didn’t seem to peerceive or understand all that the funeral home did and supplied.

Eventually, in the latter part of the 20th Century cremation associations and cremation-only businesses started to come into existence.  I think at that time Death Care perception changed and an additional  “core” business in Death Care was born.  Those businesses developed a “core” that was perceived by the consumer as “Cremation”.  Many clients still needed and wanted additional services such as a memorial service but a certain, and growing niche of consumers, considered “Cremation” as the “core” of the business that they were contacting for Death Care services.

Moving into the current environment of Death Care we have niches that want the consumer to select them for their services by their “core” business.  Some of those are cremation businesses, natural organic reduction businesses, alkaline hydrolysis businesses, flameless cremation businesses, event centers for services, online urn and jewelry sales, niche products like Better Place Forests and Parting Stone, and on and on.

So, if you operate a traditional funeral home how do you position the “core” perception of your business so that potential clients think of you not only for traditional casketed funerals and cremation services, but all of the options that are now becoming available to the general public?

The way I look at it from a consumer perspective is that there are lots of issues surrounding the death of a loved one.  People move out of home communities more often today than ever before.  Maybe those people need advice on returning a loved one to a far-away community for burial.  People, as we mentioned above, also have disposition and memorialization options that they never had before.  Many people want to know the costs and possibly set aside money for future obligations more so than in the past.

I don’t know exactly how I would do so, but as I look at the ever-expanding Death Care choices that consumers now have, I would want to position my “core” business as a “Death Care Solutions Center”.  And, I think some of the funeral homes that are advocating for community Death Cafe discussion times are on the right track to doing that.

A “Death Care Solutions Center” could position a business to offer an “Optionality” to those that call on them.  As the public continues to realize and understand that there is more to Death Care than caskets and cremation this core competency should position a funeral home to be on the front end of helping consumers decide the specifics of their future Death Care plans.

In my way of thinking, positioning your business for success is all about how you get that potential client to look to you for your “trusted advice and competence” before they look somewhere else.  And, the proper perception of what you do in their mind will help them get to you.

In the last couple of weeks I’ve noticed articles that truly point to Death Care as being at a nexus, or intersection, of technology and tradition.  Today’s Funeral Director Daily article brings you information and links to articles that truly show that Death Care is changing.

There is one article that shows evolution of a company to be able to meet the needs of today’s consumer.  It’s an article from a company with its roots in the casket business that has changed over the years to become what they term “The Cremation Solutions Leader”.

There is also an article that shows how some investors see enormous potential in the technology of Death Care and how the business can be coupled with health care, grief, and insurance to bring big changes to how consumers might interact with those business silos with greater ease and savings.

Finally, we bring you an article where an ethnic group is partnering with their federal government to keep funerals traditional for them in what indicates a growing sense of cultural niche services in Death Care.  Cultural options, much in line with the old “Catholic vs. Protestant” funeral homes of the past, is something that may be making a comeback on the horizon.  I can also see opportunties and envision certain Death Care companies making “compacts or agreements” with these groups to operate, or manage, such facilities as was done early on in the gaming world and is being done today as senior care centers of certain sizes look for contracted management outside of their walls to reduce costs.

It’s probably a good point to note that “change” is difficult for many, however the thought process of not looking at what North American consumers seem to be wanting in future Death Care may be detrimental to your business.  These business groups seem to have made decisions, and investments, based on a future of technology, cremation, and tradition. . . . and all, based on their investments, believe that there is a market for them to succeed in today’s Death Care business environment.

I think it is a real longshot and we are a long way from proclaiming that the funeral is back in American culture.  However, a couple of indicators show that Generation Z, those who are in today’s age bracket of between 13 and 28 years of age, may be yearning for a life that is in tune with an almost bygone generation, at least when it comes to church and funerals.

First of all, at last year’s National Funeral Directors Convention in New Orleans NFDA Executive Director Christine Pepper gave attendees a primer on the NFDA’s research project titled “Changing Consumer Preferences: A Generational Perspective on Attitudes Toward Funeral Service”.  One of the surprising results she shared with us was that of Generation Z which apparently had better opinions of funerals and traditional burial than the generations that were born before them.

Then just last week I read this article from the USA Today titled “Not just at Easter.  Gen Z is returning to Christianity“.  That article goes on to tell us that the men of the Gen Z generation are returning to church which appears to be stopping a trend of 30 years of decline in the question of Americans who identify as Christian.

The decline of church membership in America

For those three decades of data the overwhelming statistic has been the rise of the term “Nones” to identify those that have no religious affilitation.  According to the article, the “Nones” have led this decline in religious affilition for the past thirty years. . . .but now that decline is stopping, at least temporarily.

As the author of the article states, “Overall, younger generations are more spiritually curious. Barna research group reports that most Gen Z teens are interested in learning more about Jesus, with younger cohorts leading the way in the growth of new commitments. . . .At the same time, the dramatic rise of the nones appears to be leveling off. Sociologist Ryan Burge recently observed that the share of non-religious Americans has stopped rising in any meaningful way − a surprising pause after 30 years of growth”. 

The author also makes the following comments, “It’s too soon to announce a change to the direction of secularism, but as someone who has been an observer of Christian trends for decades, including a stint leading a Christian research organization, I’ve never seen anything like this. . . .  I did not expect it to change this quickly”.

Again, the author partially concludes with this thought, “So, it’s not time to call this a revival. But something is stirring in the data − in the culture”. 

So, from my perspective that does somewhat jive with the data that NFDA found in their consumer survey.  I would conclude that any movement back to traditional casketed funerals is far from certain, even saying that the possibility is remote. . . . .However, as the author of the USA Today article stated, “. . . .something is stirring in the data – in the culture”.
