With the advent of increased private equity ownership in the Death Care business there are not a lot of public companies to draw information from that you can compare with your own funeral home.  Quite frankly, the only two public companies where I seem able to find “comparable information” with locally owned funeral firms are Service Corporation International (SCI) and Carriage Services.

Interestingly, in the past couple of weeks both of those companies and Death Care supplier Matthews International were all in the news for various reasons.  Here’s a short synopsis of why.

First of all, SCI was involved as a participant at the Bank of America Leverage Finance Conference.  They were represented there by Senior Vice-President and Treasurer Aaron Foley who took part in a question and answer period with Bank of America Securities Larry Bland.  You can read a full transcript of the Q & A here from Seeking Alpha.

There is a lot of information for people interested in Death Care business in the Q & A.  I’ll note three items I found somewhat interesting and pretty much on trend with what I’ve heard around the profession in the past year.

• Cemeteries have great opportunities going ahead.  There is a market for “Premium Memorialization”.  Here’s what SCI’s Aaron Foley said about that issue:  “Cemetery side has continue(d) to be strong as well. We — as I know that we’ll talk about later, have a dynamic within our pre-need cemetery sales that has large sale dynamics but a core consumer dynamic as well. . . . . . But those large sales make up about 10% to 15% of our total cemetery preneed sales. And we’ve got teams out there that are constantly driving and trying to grow that.”  (Editor’s Note:  SCI considers sales of $80,000 and over Large Sales”

• The Pull-Forward effect on pandemic deaths has probably caught up and we have reached normalcy for death rates.  Here’s what SCI’s Foley said about that in the Q&A:  “I think where we stand today, it seems that, that has all kind of normalized out. . . . . .As we began our 2025 planning, we came out of this expectation after having seen in ’22, a decline of volume of 6% in ’23, 4% in ’24, we were down 2.5%. We expected 2025 to be about flat to slightly down. . . . . So seeing all those trends together kind of gives me some heart to say, I feel like we’re kind of at this normalized trend now for volume.”

• Cremation Growth has started to moderate.  Here’s what SCI’s Foley said on that dynamic in the Q&A:  “And where we stand at this 58% or so type cremation mix, when we’ve looked at other kind of Western cultures where the cremation mix has seemed to stabilize, that’s around that 70% to 80% type range. And so as we get closer to that, you would expect that, that slope should start moderating. But then when you look at a lot of the cities and urban areas that we do operate in the top 10 or 15, there’s a good chunk of those that are already kind of at or near that 70% to 80% type range. And so we’re expecting less of a pressure from that (growth of cremation) front going forward.”

Matthews International has sold their Warehouse Automation Business for $230 million.  As you may know, Matthews International operates in different business segments, with the largest, by revenue, segment its Memorialization Segment.  That segment consists of its Matthews Aurora business, The Dodge Company business, and businesses in the cremation and cemetery categories.

According to this information from Globe Newswire, “The proceeds from the transaction, net of taxes and transaction costs, will be primarily used to significantly reduce outstanding debt, further strengthening the Company’s balance sheet and enhancing its capacity to pursue future strategic initiatives.” 

Again, according to the press release, “The Warehouse Automation business generated sales of $72 million for fiscal 2025.”

If you follow the public stocks it is hard not to notice that Carriage Services has been on a deliberate plan to modernize not only their businesses but also their business plan and strategic outlook going forward.  It appears that what they are doing is being noticed not only by those of us in the Death Care business world but those who rate credit as well.

According to this note, S&P Global has elevated the Carriage Services to a B+ credit rating from a B rating.  S&P Global notes this upgrade is reflective of continued operational improvement and an anticipation of lower leverage going forward.

Last week I attended a Blue Ocean Tour seminar planned and produced by Alan Creedy and Danny Jefferson.  It was my first time on one of these events and it was an incredible learning experience including tours of Death Care facilities, a National Cemetery, discussons, learning experiences, and simple brainstorming of ideas with a group that included funeral home owners, retired funeral home owners, non-funeral director funeral home business executives, and funeral home supply company executives.

During one of our brainstorming discussions the group touched on what I call “funeral poverty”.  That being the fact that sometimes at the time of an unexpected death families are simply strapped for cash and do not have savings in place or the ability to secure credit in such a short time period.

The discussion led to the thought of crowdfunding vehicles as a way to bring in some money to pay for services.  At least one funeral director in the group said that he has had clients who do crowdfunding but the funeral home received none of the proceeds and he was still left with a really tough to collect receivable.

That’s when I mentioned that a friend of mine in funeral service, Jimmy Altmeyer, had created a program that can crowdfund for funeral expenses but is much more than that.  It is a funding device created by funeral directors for funeral directors that can help funeral homes assist members of their community for projects of all types.

There was a day when someone that used the fictional Jones Funeral Home in Anytown, USA, knew that it was the Jones family that had the ownership and pride in that business.  They knew if there was anything in their small community that pertained to Death Care business, the Jones family would know about it.

Over the years, like so many other business’, that has changed.  The fictional Jones Funeral Home may be owned by a regional or national consolidator. . . . I’m not saying that is good, bad, or otherwise. . . .it is just the way it is.

It’s interesting, however, that that change of ownership does not just happen in the local funeral homes, but it happens in the national and sometimes global world of Death Care, too.  Just since I’ve been publishing Funeral Director Daily we’ve seen formerly public companies StoneMor, Batesville, InvoCare, Dignity plc, Assurant Preneed, Park Lawn Corporation, and more change ownership. . . . . and those mentioned are only the companies that dealt in the public stock ownership realm.

Those companies, or segments of companies such as Batesville as a segment of Hillenbrand Industries, have all ended up in private company ownership at this time.  That’s been a loss for me because when they were public companies I could look at their quarterly and annual earnings on a somewhat comparative nature with my company and see where my funeral home stood — on such items as revenue per case, preneed sales, or cremations vs. interments.

Going from public company to private company is not so unusual.  Here is an article I found titled, “10 of the most famous public companies that went private”.  You’ll recognize some of the names X (Twitter), Heinz, Burger King, Dell Computer, Hilton, and Panera Bread to name six of them.

It happens the other way too —  Companies “go public” to raise funds to build their companies and they also “go public” when acquired by an existing public company.  For instance, the fictional Jones Funeral Home was a “private” company until they get acquired by a “public” company such as Service Corporation International or Carriage Services.  They then become part of a “public” company — where stock ownership can be bought and sold on the open market.

Here’s a couple of Death Care companies that, to my knowledge, are now parts of public companies:

Global Atlantic Preneed —  Global Atlantic Preneed is a segment company of KKR & Company (KKR).  According to Seeking Alpha KKR is described as such:

“KKR & Co. Inc. is a private equity and real estate investment firm specializing in direct and fund of fund investments. It specializes in acquisitions, leveraged buyouts, management buyouts, credit special situations, growth equity, mature, mezzanine, distressed, turnaround, lower middle market, and middle market investments. . . . . The firm typically holds its investment for a period of five to seven years and more and exits through initial public offerings, secondary offerings, and sales to strategic buyers.”

Interestingly enough, Global Atlantic Preneed has its origins in the Forethought Funeral Insurance brand.  It was purchased by Global Atlantic in 2014 and had originally started as part of Hillenbrand Industries, also the original parent company of Baesville.

Wilbert, Inc. — Wilbert, Inc. is a segment company of Warren Buffet led Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A. BRK.B).  According to Seeking Alpha Berkshire Hathaway is described as such:

“Berkshire Hathaway Inc., through its subsidiaries, engages in the insurance, freight rail transportation, and utility businesses worldwide. The company provides property, casualty, life, accident, and health insurance and reinsurance; operates railroad systems in North America; generates, transmits. . . . .Berkshire Hathaway Inc. was incorporated in 1998 and is headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska.”

Grief is a journey that no one wants to traverse, yet it is a path many will find themselves on when a loved one passes away. As we contemplate the profound impact of loss, it’s vital to recognize how we can reach out and support our friends during their times of sorrow. Understanding our role can foster connection and compassion, especially in a world filled with emotional challenges. When we think about navigating this sensitive subject, finding the right balance between offering support and respecting personal space is essential, particularly as families often seek services from adjacent resources, such as Rochester, NY funeral homes. Understanding Grief and Its Phases Before we can effectively support our grieving friends, we should take time to understand the grieving process itself. In conclusion, as we support our friends during these heartbreaking times, let’s embrace compassion and understanding, remembering our larger community as we navigate the journey together. Every day I search out articles about Death Care services to provide me with information on topics of interest in our profession/industry.  One of the things that has been extremely disappointing to this life-long funeral director and funeral home owner is the amount of negative publicity our profession piles on itself because of what I call “bad actors” in the profession.

Virtually every day there are newspaper articles written about the negative effects funeral homes have had on the families that they are supposed to be serving.  Those articles are generally about unfulfilled promises but many times are much worse — such as having unsanitary conditions for the storage of bodies or even worse. . . such as just not doing what they said they did.  Many of these instances happen to be telling families that their loved ones have been cremated when, for whatever reason, the deceased is still on the funeral home premises and has not been cremated.

In fact, these incidents are so regular worldwide that Funeral Director Daily has quit writing about most of them.  If we did I’m guessing that you would hear of some type of negative incident weekly.  And, simply reporting on, and calling out the bad actors, is not something I find of interest to my readers.

However, every once in a while I am moved to say something.

The latest incident that I read about was an incident from Maryland which I learned of on January 27.  Here is an article and news story out of Baltimore on the situation.

This article from the BBC tells of a situation in Great Britain last year that shocked the British public.  The article from November 2024 states that it is prompting a review of the “funeral sector”.

One community, The Wealdon District Council, recently completed their assignment from the Ministry of Justice and Minister for Local Government which asked for “visits to be carried out as a matter of public reassurance in the largely unregulated industry”.

The Wealdon District Council released their findings to the public a couple of weeks ago.  In that release titled “Report shows confidence in funeral directors”  a total of 25 funeral directors, some with more than one branch in Rother and Wealden, were given public reassurance following assessment of hygiene, facility conditions and capability, traceability and transparency, dignity and condition of deceased people in their care and pre-paid funeral plans.  Here is that release.

That article also went on to say this “all but two of Rother and Wealden’s funeral directors were given letters of public assurance.  Officers were unable to carry our check on Aurora Funerals in Crowborough or Fenix Funeral Directors, listed in Bexhill, and public assurance was not given.”

Funeral Director Daily take:  I find it really sad that this type of “assurance” had to be given to the general public about funeral homes and funeral directors.  We should be better than this.

I’ve never been perfect in anything in my life, however, every single family that I served over 33 years got 100% effort and trustworthiness from me. . . . And, that included familes I knew that I would not get paid from.  To me, serving families in need with everything I had to offer was simply a part of my humanity.

We are entering a new generation of funeral consumers who can now facilitate their choices for disposition, celebration, and memorialization without the use of traditional funeral homes. If traditional funeral homes want to stay relevant with the consumers we hope to serve we cannot sink so low that we need government offices telling those consumers that we are “OK”.

It’s simply time to “Raise our game” to a level that there is absolutely no question in consumers’ minds that we will do what we say we will.

The Funeral Director Daily article published last Friday was about the World Economic Forum (WEF) recently held in Davos, Switzerland.  The world’s business leaders met there and one of the concepts for business growth that came out of that forum was “Trust”.  I think it is time that funeral directors, as a whole, re-establish ours.

If you are an investor in the public stock markets — and most people are now with the advent of IRA’s and 401k plans — you would more than likely be pleased with the growth of your investment had you simply followed an investment strategy of investing in the index of stock market holdings in the Dow 30, the NASDAQ, and the S&P 500.

From the period of January 1, 2024, through the final trading day of the year, December 31, 2024, those market indexes grew by the following percentages:

• Dow 30:       +13.6&
• NASDAQ:    +32.3%
• S&P 500:     +25.2%

If you invested in equal shares of the four publicly traded companies that comprise the Funeral Director Daily Death Care Index (DCI) you would have ended up with a total stock appreciation return of 14.9% for the same time period.  That is down in the last month from December 2, 2024, when Funeral Director Daily published this article showing that at that time the return stood at 24.3% year to date.

However, like many public companies, December 2024 was not kind to the stock prices of Death Care stocks for what could be many reasons, including year-end profit taking.  As a matter of fact, all four companies that comprise the DCI ended 2024 with a lower stock price than they reflected on November 30, 2024.  Those four companies include Service Corporation International (SCI), Carriage Services, Matthews International, and Security National Financial Corporation.  The combined share price of one share of each of those companies stood at $172.38 on November 30, 2024, and had fell to $159.38 on December 31, 2024.

The good news however, is that they started 2024 at a combined price of $138.68 and ended the year at $159.38 — an increase of 14.9% on the year.

Three of the four Death Care Index companies had price appreciation in their stock prices during 2024 with Carriage Services gaining a whopping 59.3% on the year.

Funeral Director Daily take:  When I talk to people about the “Death Care Industry” my perception is that most people are bullish about the profession and its movement forward. . . .especially with the fact that the number of deaths per year going forward is virtually guaranteed to rise because of the ageing of the American demographic.

However, balanced with that “positive trend” moving forward is the growing implication that many of the future deceased and their families may choose to spend less than today’s current amounts on their final arrangement services.  I don’t think that potential unknown of “funeral spend” is lost on the investing community.

That “teeter-totter” of thought, if you will, is what I think guides many investor’s decisons about their investment in funeral service.  I also think that may be one of the reasons that investors have been investing in Carriage Services.  If there is an eventual lessening of “funeral spend” in the years to come, those companies who have their debt in check will be in better situations than those that don’t.  Carriage Services has been very forward in talking about how they are getting their debt under control . . . and that may resonate with the investing public.

Here’s what Kathy Shanley, Carriage Services Chief Accounting Officer said of that commitment in the company’s October 31, 2024, Earnings Call, “We paid $15 million towards our outstanding debt this quarter as we continue to drive down our leverage ratio, which is now at 4.3x, down from 5.3x at Q3 of 2023. This reduction in leverage illustrates our commitment to disciplined capital allocation. . . “

Carriage Services had a new CEO named in June 2023 when Carlos Quezada was put in that position.  He was the first CEO to replace founder Melvin Payne who had been in that position since 1991.  I think investors have seen how Quezada and his team have seemed to put in place a patient and deliberate plan to put the company in the best position possible as Death Care moves forward with probable generational changes coming to the business over the next decade and beyond as more options for dispositions, celebrations, and memorializations come to pass.

For decades the mantra in growing funeral service companies has always been about “growing revenue” to increase cash-flows.  Maybe the investing public is changing to a more balanced approach about not only growing revenue but including a “watch your expenses” attitude to grow that cash-flow.

It was a fairly uncommon occurence on October 30 when the two largest public funeral home and cemetery operating companies reported their 3rd Quarter results on the same day.  Both companies, Service Corporation International (SCI) and Carriage Services, reported “after the financial markets closed’ that day.  So, the first trading that could be done post-reports was Thursday, October 31.

It was obvious that shareholders and market watchers liked what they heard from SCI and Carriage Services because both companies stock price began increasing.  It was also interesting that after the Presidential election on Tuesday stocks, in general, had an advance through Friday’s closing.

Funeral Director Daily will not give any commentary on this issue but will provide some links where you may find more information on these companies at the bottom of this article for your use.
