In this press release issued last week you can read that PlotBox has acquired MIS (sometimes referred to as HMIS).  The PlotBox website brings about this statement about the integration of the companies, “ (this transaction) bring(s) one of the industry’s most comprehensive capabilities – from PlotBox’s cloud-native mapping, operations, records, and financial management to MIS’s longstanding experience serving funeral homes.”

The press release also states this about MIS, “MIS is a management platform serving funeral and cemetery operators across North America, streamlining operations from first call through aftercare. The software unifies case management, scheduling, arrangements, billing, and reporting, with integrations for accounting, payments, and partner tools.”

Funeral Director Daily take:  There has been a lot of shifting of ownership of Death Care companies lately.  Every week we see notices of different companies moving in different directions, sometimes like in today’s article, via acquisition.

In my opinion, the one common denominator in the transactions is the movement to “more and more” technology.  I think those who own and manage funeral homes, crematories, and cemeteries should take heed of what the supplier companies are doing.  I think these transactions and the vendor companies getting more and more technology oriented is showing a roadmap of what the consumers of Death Care are going to want down the road.

My take on all of this technology is that even if you consider yourself “technology challenged” like me, it will pay to learn about the capabilities that these technology companies can bring to your operation and to have some semblance of how you may want that technology available to work for you in your specific situation.

Death Care is fast transforming in the services that we provide for consumers and fast transforming in the options that consumers have to select their Death Care choices from outside the traditional funeral home provider network.  If traditional funeral homes want to keep and expand their market share in the future they need the technology tools to do so.  Putting your head in the sand and hoping these technologies will go away will, more than likely, not bring a positive outcome for your business.

We didn’t quite make it through the week without being able to give you another article which again shows a “bullishness” in the greater Death Care profession and industry.  As I’ve noticed several times recently, at the same time that many Death Care retail operators are “skittish” about the future of their business it seems that the more global professional money managers who direct the investments of private investors are continuing to be bullish in the profession. . . if their investments in Death Care are any indication.

Funeral Director Daily take:  It was somewhat tongue-in-cheek that I mentioned we could not get through the week without another investment in Death Care by private equity. That seems to be happening more and more bringing big business into what for a century has been small independent operators.

And while I understand change is hard for many — especially home town funeral directors who have “lived the life” of taking care of their community.  The fact that private equity is continuing to invest in Death Care should let us know that we have built a valuable commodity with our businesses.

Private equity is a reality all around the greater Death Care community at this time.  There is no doubt that the money they bring to the table will change the “business”.  However, the simple fact that they are investing in the industry/profession should tell us that our businesses may be more valuable, or have better growth potential, than we realize.

Many regional consolidators are financed with private equity capital which possibly allows owners to exit their business with higher values than might be available if those consolidators were not, at least sometimes, competing for the purchase.  And, it is not just funeral homes that are gaining value from these sales but the new technological businesses that are being formed to help the retail Death Care market —  some firms that you might do business with such as MJK Marketing, Frazer Consultants, SRS Computing, Tukios, Legacy.com and more on the periphery of funeral service are, or at one time, were part of private equity investors.

I think it is important to understand that some of us in the family funeral home business that are worrying about our revenue per service moving downward and see only a negative spiral for funeral service have a completey different outlook on our business than some in the professional financial markets do.  Only time will tell who is seeing it right.

Everstory Partners serves over 65,000 families annually and in addition to its funeral home business, operates close to 400 cemeteries around the United States, including Puerto Rico.

Recently they authored this press release which lets us know that they have completed a process in which all cemeteries have been digitized.  Here’s what Everstory CEO Lilly Donohue said in the press release about the process,  “When I joined Everstory, our teams wrote paper contracts for in-ground burials and mausoleum interments based on paper maps that could be 50 or 100 years old. Our systems and processes had not evolved, and our families and employees deserve better than that. So, during 2024, we digitized services and contracts at all our cemetery locations. Now, every contract is digital and in most cases, accompanied by aerial drone mapping. This digitization will help protect families’ end-of-life choices for generations to come.”

To accomplish this task Everstory Partners teamed-up with Plotbox which is described in the press release as such, “. . . an international cloud-based deathcare management software and mapping company based in Northern Ireland, with a team in the United States.”
