Do More People Die During a Full Moon?

The full moon gets blamed for all kinds of nonsense: spates of weirdness or bad luck, general craziness, psychosis. Busy emergency rooms. Increased fatalities. Freak accidents. People are quick to blame a full moon for crimes, mischief, and general bad behavior; there have even been studies into whether car and motorcycle wrecks coincide with the full phase of the moon.

Also, obviously, there’s the werewolf thing.

Fact or fiction?

We the people believe it in droves — anecdotal evidence in the media has supported the phenomenon, and urban legends run a bit wild on the subject. The idea that a full moon pulls on our sanity like it does on the ocean’s tides has a deep and ancient roots. At one point, there was even a (short-lived) law in Britain accounting for the moon’s effects on criminal behavior. Victorian physicians believed that the moon’s fullness could affect the “humors of the body,” reporting spikes in admissions to asylums during its full phase. And don’t forget the word “lunatic” derives from luna, the Latin word for moon.

In death care, the belief of the full moon imposing a death toll persists not because of superstition, but because of experience: first responders, hospital personnel, and funeral professionals alike have attested to an almost predictable uptick in fatalities during a full moon. When this stage of the lunar cycle coincides with odd calls and strange circumstances, such events seem more pronounced.

Maybe we joke about it. But we also check the night sky.

Science the skeptic

Is it reassuring to know that scientific studies do not — so far — implicate the moon, but also do not exclude the possibility of its role in certain sort of “mischief” in human biology?

Homicides, ER activity, and natural deaths have been the basis of research seeking to answer the question of the moon’s effects on human behavior. Findings have, to date, pretty consistently exonerated the moon: thousands of cases of deaths (including suicides) and violent crimes show no relationship with the lunar cycle. Spikes appear due to chance clustering or human error in reporting.

For those whose lives run in close proximity to life’s end, the persistence of this perception is part pattern recognition. Seeing such regularities is a survival skill, if not always an accurate one. But when your business is literally death, such super-honed spidey senses can come with the job. Let’s call that a perk .

As humans, we’re all more likely to pick up the out-of-the-ordinary than we are its absence, when things plug along business as usual. A night of chaos on the full moon is more memorable than a peaceful one.

This isn’t superstition. There’s an instinct-based phenomenon at work when one suspects an eerie link between some event and a full moon. Also, don’t forget the full moon has a vibe: light, shadows, midnight calls — everything gets imbued with its innate silver force. For graveyard shift workers and embalmers, the night’s texture seems touched by the hand of the uncanny.

Understanding these beliefs

There’s practical value in knowing the belief in the power of full moon is pervasive even without an objectively proven basis. Client families may wish to hold cultural ceremonies around the moon’s phases; pagan and folk traditions consider the moon’s full aspect transitional, a portal between states. Recognizing the importance of the natural world’s role can inform cultural sensitivity.

So maybe we can’t prove that the full moon can be fatal. It still shapes our experience. The full moon’s indisputable effects on atmosphere, mood and expectation requires no studies.

Whatever influence the moon has, death care’s work schedule will remain reliable.

It’s Monday, October 27, and much of the Death Care universe is centered in Chicago, Illinois, attending the National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) International Convention & Expo.  I had my schedule of the convention mapped out and was looking forward to attending my friend Doug Gober’s session on “Customer Loyalty” this morning”  and learning from the Glenn Gould, Jeff Smith, and Chris Farmer sessions tomorrow.

As I write this on Wednesday, October 22, however, I’ve cancelled my attendance as it just happens to be one of those years where “Life” got in my way.  I’ll miss seeing old friends and meeting new ones.  I’ll miss learning about new products and services to help those who deal on the front lines with families who have lost loved ones.

I’ve been retired now for over a decade from owning and operating a funeral home and working everyday as a funeral director.  I notified a couple of my friends, whom I make a point to see every year, that I would not be in attendance this year and, in part, received the following reply from one of those funeral directors, “I’m dragging my feet this trip a bit. Having problems getting a spring to my step. New teen suicide this morning also has me down.”

When I read that it put me back into remembering my days on the front line of funeral service and days where, I too, “got down”.  I don’t know how many days I went to work and got a call from law enforcement or a parent about an auto accident or suicide.  Those types of deaths happened with “friends” and “church members”, and “Little Leaguers”.

Like I surmise from that funeral director, I always dreaded going and seeing the families, most of whom I knew in our small community, under those circumstances.

Those arrangements and services always took an incredible amount of effort.  I was numb to anything else going on in the world for those four or five days during the time period of arrangements to burial.  The effort it took to serve those families almost always sapped me and when the services were over I needed time to decompress.  I was lucky to have an incredible wife and family that seemed to understand my situation at that time.

It eventually got to the point that I would ask myself, “Why do they always ask for me?” . . . .Because secretly I wished that these families didn’t.

However, I eventually reached a point where I said to myself, “Somebody has to take care of these people and no one will do it better than me.”  That attitude helped me see the end of the rainbow for funeral service. . . . . regardless of the effort involved, it was my duty and responsibility to see these families forward  — if it wasn’t my duty to do so, I concluded, whose duty was it?

So, in Chicago today, enjoy the Expo floor, enjoy the seminars, but most of all, give support to each other because as a funeral director you know the effort needed to help grieving families in a society where most people just don’t understand.

In early October North America’s largest purveyor of Death Care services, Service Corporation International (SCI), received an approved zoning ruling to build Funeraria del Angel, a funeral home and cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.  You can read about the development in this article from the San Antonio Report titled “Against a school district’s wishes, the South Side is getting a new cemetery“.

Service Corporation International (SCI) first submitted the request a full year ago in October 2024, causing backlash from the Southside Mission Del Lago community and a meeting with local residents.

In what is somewhat a rare instance the local school district, Southside Independent School District, had actually passed a resolution in opposition to the 80-acre site becoming a cemetery.  According to the article, it turns out that “In Texas, cemeteries are tax-exempt, meaning they don’t have to pay property taxes to the local government agencies, including the school districts they’re located in.  Property taxes are a significant revenue stream for school districts — it’s how districts pay for day-to-day costs and how they pay off bond debt used for infrastructure projects. Limited funding by the state puts more pressure on school districts’ property tax collecting measures.”

Again, according to the article, “Financial pressures and growing enrollment in the area are in large part why the (school) district’s board of trustees adopted a resolution against SCI’s rezoning request with a 5-1-1 vote.”  You can see a copy of that resolution here.

Instead of a cemetery located on potential prime commercial property on the 80 acres in question many community members suggested that the vacant acreage could be used for residential housing or commercial uses such as grocery stores, restaurants, retail stores, and medical clinics– all uses that would carry with them a tax assesed value for the school district.

Residents against the SCI proposal also pointed out that District 3 already had 21 cemeteries — most of which have been around for a hundred years before zoning regulations.

Funeral Director Daily take:  As America continues having changing views on Death Care I think “zoning issues” will become more and more top of mind in the construction of new funeral homes, cemeteries, and crematories.  The interesection of urban planning, resident wishes, and Death Care businesses is simply becoming more and more difficult to manage and reach amenable solutions for all parties.

In another view of this situation, I was interested in how people in cemetery’s don’t pay taxes, but my father always joked that they could vote.  Back in the 1960 Presidential election the claim is that Vice-President Richard Nixon would have won that election had he captured the electoral votes of Illinois. . . .a state in which he lost by fewer than 9,000 votes.

My dad used to always say that he would like to be buried in Illinois. . . .”because at least he could still vote there”.  So, if you think a debate over election vote totals is something new, you didn’t know about the accusations of the 1960 vote in Illinois.  According to some people, names on cemetery tombstones were scoured to get voter registrations for them and absentee votes from those “cemetery people” carried the Illinois election for John F. Kennedy. . . and put him in the White House!!!

My wife sometimes accuses me of being too friendly.  You see, I’m okay in a crowded coffee shop or elsewhere, asking if I could share the table with already seated customers. . . .while Angie would simply leave the shop because it was too busy.

I try not to be intrusive on other people because I have times I don’t want to be bothered as well.  However, I’m met some great friends and had great discussions with strangers who were willing to share their table with me.

John Adams

One of those times was at the Baltimore Convention Center during the 2022 National Funeral Directors Convention.  I randomly sat down with two Brits attending the convention, one of whom I learned was Great Britain’s President of their National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD), John Adams.

I learned that Adams works in a family-owned funeral home, Perry & Phillips, which you can read about here.  The business was founded in 1835.  In sitting down with Adams I learned a little of his background, including that his mother died when he was 12 years old.

That experience for him, as you can read about here, was a rallying cry for his term as President of NAFD.  Adams believed that a missing element for young people was the lack of learning about how death, dying, and bereavement can affect a child as he or she grows up.

During his preseidency and beyond, Adams pressed forward in his quest to have all children in Great Britain be taught about death,dying, grief, and bereavement.  He began a petition asking Parliament to look at that question as it continued to refine its public school requirements.  In addition, he met with King Charles to bring attention to the issue as you can read here.

There are now results —  Adams’ quest for children to learn that “Death is part of Life” has culminated with Adams being informed and Parliament now requiring that before a student finishes Primary School they must understand “That change and loss, including bereavement, can provoke a range of feelings, that grief is a natural response to bereavement, and that everyone grieves differently”.

Here are the new “General Requirements” for Primary School students in Great Britain to know in the “General Wellbeing category” effective September 1, 2026 (#8 is the new requirement that has been added):

Curriculum content:
1. The benefits of physical activity, time outdoors, and helping others for health,
wellbeing and happiness. Simple self-care techniques, including the importance of
rest, time spent with friends and family, as well as hobbies, interests and
community participation.
2. The importance of promoting general wellbeing and physical health.
3. The range and scale of emotions (e.g. happiness, sadness, anger, fear, surprise,
nervousness) that they might experience in different situations. Pupils should
understand that worrying and feeling down are normal, affect everyone at different
times, and are not in themselves a sign of a mental health condition.
4. How to recognise feelings and use varied vocabulary to talk about their own and
others’ feelings.
5. How to judge whether what they are feeling and how they are behaving is
appropriate and proportionate.
6. That isolation and loneliness can affect children, and the benefits of seeking
support.
7. That bullying (including cyberbullying) has a negative and often lasting impact on
mental wellbeing and how to seek help for themselves or others.
8. That change and loss, including bereavement, can provoke a range of feelings,
that grief is a natural response to bereavement, and that everyone grieves
differently.
9. Where and how to seek support (including recognising the triggers for seeking
support), including who in school they should speak to if they are worried about
their own or someone else’s mental wellbeing or ability to control their emotions
(including issues arising online).
10.That it is common to experience mental health problems, and early support can help.

Funeral Director Daily take:  From my perspective, making children aware of the consequences of grief and bereavement is extremely important in society.  According to this article and video report from ABC News 1 in 12 children (8.3%) in America will experience the death of a parent before they turn 18 years of age.

According to Micki Burns, the co-author of the report cited in the ABC feature, “Children who have lost a parent can feel isolated because it’s difficult for other kids to understand grief and loss. Recognizing that [losing a parent or sibling] is prevalent is important.  It’s something that we need to start to talk about more openly and more easily so that the children don’t feel so isolated.”

As she intimates, knowing about grief, loss, and bereavement is not only a good thing for those that lose loved ones, it is important for those who are friends of the bereaved so that they know about the emotions and feelings of one who has lost a parent.

The ABC article mentions that in America, the state of West Virginia has the highest percentage of “childhood grief” at 13.3% of all children in the state while the state of Minnesota has the lowest percentage of childhood grief.  The article postulates that poverty and resources availability may be one of the factors in the difference.

Finally, again from my point of view,  I think the more that we can teach the “soft sciences” such as grief and bereavement to our children the better society we will live in.  From my experience on the Board of Regents at the University of Minnesota I found no shortage of scholars among our youth — We are in good hands in that regard.  However, many of those same students would ask about classes that would help them navigate life as to finances, mental health, and good living practices.  I was always disappointed that I could not get the powers that be to offer more classes in those disciplines . . . . .so, I’m extremely appreciative that John Adams has!!!

Afterall partnered with Talker Research to survey 2,000 general population Americans to dig into how people really feel about discussing death with those closest to them.

The findings highlighted the challenges and obstacles people face when approaching end-of-life planning with their loved ones:

Having the Conversation is Tough

• It’s most challenging to have the conversation with your parents: Only 36% of people shared that they had no problem discussing end-of-life plans with those they love.  And more than half (56%), whether they’re afraid to or just don’t think it’s necessary, haven’t even broached the conversation with their parents
• People don’t know how to discuss the inevitable: Respondents admitted they just keep putting it off (26%), don’t know how to talk about it (23%) or were simply scared to have the conversation (16%)
• In-person is preferred: More than 50% of people would ideally like to have end-of-life planning conversations in-person and one-on-one; with so many people living apart from loved ones, it makes having that conversation even harder

“End-of-life planning is one of the most important and meaningful gifts we can give to our loved ones, but it’s an incredibly hard topic to broach,” said Lee Senderov, chief marketing and digital officer at Afterall. “Our goal at Afterall is to make every step of the process easier – whether it’s just the first conversation or a loved one has already passed. Military service during wartime is not a choice, but a necessity. Yet, in the past there was never a problem getting people to volunteer to enlist. In fact, many young men lied about their ages to actually gain entry into service rather than seek to find some convenient reason they could not serve their country. Many times those who might have a physical impediment that kept them from active military duty still found a way in other branches to be of service from the ground or behind a desk, all because they shared that same desire to serve.

In some families, military service is generational and it’s a natural expectation that sons and daughters will follow in their parents’ footsteps and enlist in a particular branch of service.
