A FH scandal in Ohio?

Funeral director Hunter Triplett went viral this month as the owner of the first funeral home in Ohio to apply for a liquor license. Allegedly. Yep, you heard that right. The Columbus Dispatch did some digging, and found that Triplett was not, in fact, the first — or even the fifth — Ohio funeral home owner, director, or CEO (yes, he’s all three) to apply for or to be approved for a liquor license. Mmmhmmm. You heard that right. The Dispatchers checked the state database (investigative reporting at work) and found that THREE other Ohio funeral homes have active licenses AND two more have pending applications. However, we have to give it to young Hunter for his successful (if false) pitch that could break all funeral home virality records. And if that’s not dope enough, young Hunter’s funeral home is housed in a former chocolate factory. Take that, Charlie.

But wait … there’s more! Now an etiquette expert from Texas has weighed in on the “controversy” of serving cocktails alongside caskets, and … dum-dum-DUMM — he says it’s not cool, man. The etiquette person told Fox News Digital that “’it’s not the norm’ to be offered alcohol at a funeral home – and it comes with the risk of suggesting a bar or party atmosphere. ‘Having an open bar at a funeral home sets a different tone,’” he said. Yep. Like a celebration. Of a loved one’s life, perhaps.

And the winner is …

A Michigan woman is $637 poorer today, but her money was well spent. She won an auction to visit the empty mausoleum of the founder of the Oldsmobile brand on Friday, June 13, 2025. The crypt was robbed of remains and valuables in the 1990s, so it’s been locked up tight, but this auction, which was sanctioned by the Olds family, will allow the lucky winner and three friends to be the first folks to enter in decades. The auction was a fundraiser for the community’s historical cemetery society, and the husband of the fifth-great-granddaughter of Mr. Olds threw in another $363 to make the donation an even $1000 as a gift to his wife.

It’s not THAT terrible

Wow, those Brits don’t understand the value of a good burial plot, do they? Apparently not, as a gravesite was listed in a recent poll as one of the nation’s all-time worst Christmas gifts! We can understand the other unwanted items, though — a toilet seat, a used clothes dryer, regifted shower wash, and beef for a vegetarian. 

It’s the middle of the month and with that comes our publishing of Funeral Director Daily’s “Top Read Articles” of the past 30 days.  This month’s leading articles are no surprises because they are subjects that seem to be on the minds of Death Care business leaders and funeral home owners more and more.

When I attended the NFDA Convention in New Orleans in October I heard, and saw from exhibitors, these topics more than others. . . . . and I’m talking about private equity, the 60-year old funeral home owner looking at succession plans, and answers for families concering what to do with cremated remains. .  .

So, here are the Top Read articles from November 15 to December 15 that were published by Funeral Director Daily:

2. “Come Together”:  Mergers, bolt-ons, work for family firms too.
3. Survey indicates the Top Location in each state for dispersal of cremated remains.

It’s somewhat of an interesting phenomena, and the proof of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) with Google, that the story “60 years ago today. . .and the story of the Kennedy Casket” continues each November to be one of our Top Read stories.  Funeral Director Daily first brought that story to light in 2021 before reprising it in 2023.  It’s my belief that the Kennedy assasination that happened in November 1963 is still searched at great lengths every November. . . .and our story pops up . . . bringing with it outside readers to Funeral Director Daily.

So, because that is an “old story” we gave you a bonus story this month. . . the #6 read story of the month.

Monday’s Down Time —  Many of our readers woke up on Monday morning and could not access their daily dose of Funeral Director Daily.  I was in the same boat and by 6:15 am had our internet host, Go Daddy, looking into the issue.  I’m incredibly ingrained with a “Customer Satisfaction” bent, so when something like this happens I’m always in a hurry to figure it out.

And, since I’m not the greatest technology wizard I always assume the worst. . . like some nefarious characters have taken hold of the website.  I’m happy to report that was not the issue and Go Daddy had us back up in about 2 hours.  Here’s what Go Daddy told us of the problem:

There is a high number of requests being sent to the server, exhausting all the available resources.. . . 

Furthermore, here are the results of our findings:   Reviewing the cPanel Hosting server, we did find that resources were exhausted within the previous 24 hours. . . . 

When these resources are exhausted, it results in timeouts like this, as well as a slow and sluggish experience for the site users.   It is recommended to have the site content reviewed for optimization and/or upgrade the hosting resources if deemed necessary. 

Turns out, like other times something like this has happened. . . . that it is usually growth that has caused the issue as the numbers we are bringing to Funeral Director Daily exceed our ability to serve them technologically.  I have my technology vendor looking at what does need to be expanded to make sure this situation doesn’t happen again.

I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience and angst this caused you on Monday morning.  I plan to offer the article from Monday morning in an Afternoon edition in the near future.

While it is all anecdotal on my part, what I’ve seen lately leads me to believe that there is plenty of money in circulation looking for investment and that some of that money will end up going into the Death Care sphere.  I’ve noticed it for the last year by having private equity firms contact Funeral Director Daily looking for “purchase leads” and I noticed it in New Orleans when wandering the convention floor.

If you need any more proof here’s a short article from The Business Magazine of Great Britain announcing that investment management firm Downing is entering the funeral business and using their first acquisition to “. . . build a national network of funeral directors” as the Downing website, that you can access here, states.

Now, Downing is no small company.  They have been in existence for almost 40 years, have over US$ 2.5 billion under management, and have offices in Sweden and Finland in addition to their base in the United Kingdom.  That they have chosen to enter the Death Care field exhibits how many, outside of the field, view the profit potential moving forward.

In an article from Great Britain’s Funeral Service Times, which I cannot link because of a pay wall, here are some of the quotes given in relation to Downing’s first acquisition:

 

• “Investment management firm Downing has completed its acquisition of Grassby and Sons, an established group of funeral directors across Dorset and Devon, for an undisclosed sum.”

• “As a result, Downing has also established a funeral director-specific portfolio company, Lighthouse Funerals.”

• “Downing’s decision to invest in the funeral sector comes as it believes it is growing and resilient, but also “a highly fragmented market that will benefit from consolidation”.

• “Over the past five years, revenues in the sector (in Great Britain) have grown at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.3% to reach an estimated US$ 3.6 billion in 2024. As the UK population continues to age, demand for funeral services will increase.”

 

According to the Business Magazine of Great Britain article, the first acquisition by Downing (Lighthouse Funerals) was “Sixth-generation family funeral directors Grassby & Sons (which) was established as a stonemason in Dorchester in 1861. Since branching out into funerals in 1970, the business has expanded organically and through acquisition, and now operates eight funeral directors serving Dorset and East Devon.”

Here’s what one of their owners said in the article about aligning with Downing (Lighthouse Funerals), “The opportunity to play a pivotal part in Downing’s ambition to grow a high-quality group in the industry was the differentiating factor between the potential buyers, and we look forward to seeing Grassby & Sons playing a key role in the development of Lighthouse Funerals.”

Funeral Director Daily take:  My opinion is that Lighthouse Funerals will give independent British funeral directors another option when and if they choose to put their funeral homes on the market.  My guess is that at least for the time being, with Dignity, Funeral Partners, and others in the market for “right-opportunity” growth, maybe it will become a real seller’s market in what is becoming a tough business segment in Great Britain.

And, for those in the North American markets, I think it is only a matter of time before a financial services, investment, or private equity company such as Downing makes this type of announcement on this continent.

Here’s a good news story for a change.

New Zealand seniors are forming Coffin Clubs to build their own coffins, adding their personal style with paint and other decorations for when the time comes when they might need to use it.

The do-it-yourself movement began in 2010, started by a palliative care nurse, Katie Williams, in a makeshift workshop in her garage in Rotorua, on the North Island. She got some volunteer handymen to help local seniors build their own coffins — they are made from particleboard kits and are shaped like traditional caskets or as rectangles.

“Because of my work and my age I had become a perpetual mourner,” Williams told The Guardian newspaper.

“I had seen lots of people dying and their funerals were nothing to do with the vibrancy and life of those people,” she said. “You would not know what they were really like. That they had lived and laughed and loved. I had a deep-seated feeling that people’s journey’s deserved a more personal farewell.”

“I’m going down with Elvis,” says this Coffin Club member.

There are now more than a dozen coffin clubs in New Zealand. Seniors found it was fun painting and decorating their own coffins and a great way for many lonely seniors to socialize with others in the same age group, many of whom had loved one pass away.

“We like to say it is only a box until you put someone in it,” one woman told the New York Times in a story published earlier this year.

The boxes can also double as furniture at home — one woman uses hers as a seating area with cushions.

The coffin kits cost about $170, much less than what a funeral home charges for a coffin of similar quality. Club membership ranges from $7 to $17 a year.
