I graduated from high school in 1976.  The that time period around the 200th anniversary of our nation brought about profound thought change of women in the workplace.

It was about that time, as you can see by the graphic below, that females caught and eventually passed males in college enrollment.  Up until that time young females were counseled to be nurses not doctors, legal secretaries not attorneys, and teachers — certainly not college presidents.  I mention that last occupation because during my tenure on the University of Minnesota Board of Regents I was part of the Board that hired the first female President in the university’s storied 168 year history.  (An interesting side note is that the University of Minnesota was founded in 1851 by immigrants to provide education for their children a full seven years before Minnesota was granted statehood).

Some different professions and the demographics of women that led and worked in them changed faster than others.  When I graduated from mortuary school in 1980 with about 40 fellow graduates I don’t believe we had any female graduates in the class.  Today, however, we hear that over 70% of mortuary students in training are female.

And, there is no doubt that women seem to be much more interested in “Business occupations” than ever before.  Part of my research for this article was to find the demographic make-up of the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Business — for decades the domain of enterprising male students.  Last year’s demographic profile indicated that today about 46% of the students enrolled there are female.  You can see the demographics here.

There is also no doubt that the consumer facing side of funeral service has changed to a profession where a grieving family is as likely to work with a female funeral director as they are a male funeral director.  But that is not all — females are now becoming the executive leaders of many Death Care operations.   Of what I believe are the four largest consumer funeral home and cemetery operators in the United States — Service Corporation International, Carriage Services, Everstory Partners, and Park Lawn Corporation — two of them are led by female Chief Executive Officers.  Everstory Partners is led by Lilly Donohue and Park Lawn Corporation is led by Jennifer Hays.

That brings me to the story of “Funeral Women Lead“.  An organization for the women in funeral service has been established and will, in my opinion, pave the way for more women to take leadership roles in the profession.  Funeral directing and the business of funeral homes was not so long ago the complete domain of males.  That is changing and it will be interesting to see how the increasing role of women in management in the profession might change some directions.

Funeral Women Lead has recruited some of the most prominent women in the profession to their management team and board.  This group makes me more excited than ever that funeral service has room for everybody and as a profession we will be better off for getting our leadership from a varied group of individuals.

The paradigm shift to female funeral directors has happened right in front of my eyes.  The funeral home I used to own and manage has went from a 100% male licensed funeral director staff when I started to a licensed staff that is now 60% female.  Anecdotally, over my time as the owner of the funeral home I mentored three young people who wanted to, and eventually did, become licensed funeral directors —- all three were female.

PLPA Short Course 2025 Equips Deathcare Professionals to Lead in the Growing Pet Loss Market

STERLING, Va. (August 7, 2025) – The International Cemetery, Cremation and Funeral Association (ICCFA), in partnership with the Pet Loss Professionals Alliance (PLPA), is proud to announce the successful conclusion of the 2025 PLPA Pet Loss & Integration Short Course, held July 18–20 at the Emory Conference Center Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia.

The two-day program brought together funeral service professionals, crematory operators, and pet loss providers for a focused, hands-on curriculum aimed at integrating pet loss services into traditional deathcare operations. Topics ranged from compliance and crematory care to family engagement and business development.

“This course isn’t just about pet loss—it’s about leadership in a space that demands empathy, innovation, and thoughtful integration. Serving pets is serving people,” said Lauren Blevins Hogan, CCFE, CPLP, PLPA Committee Chair. “Attendees left with practical tools, renewed confidence, and a deepened sense of mission.”

Educational highlights included sessions on leveraging AI for compassionate service (Pierce Dempsey), emerging legal risks (Poul Lemasters, Esq.), how pet cremation can serve as a bridge to preplanning discussions (Tony Armogida), and operational best practices in pet cremation (Larry Stuart Jr.). Attendees also explored cemetery development strategies with John Bolton, CCE, CCrE, CSE CXE, phone etiquette with Nicki Wiedeman, CSE, and pet program development with Andrew Parsell.

“This course demonstrates what’s possible when you combine operational excellence with heartfelt service,” said ICCFA Executive Director Nadira Baddeliyanage. “It’s one of the many ways ICCFA is helping our members meet the evolving needs of today’s families.”

“As the pet loss profession continues to evolve, this course offers timely education and practical tools,” said ICCFA President Bob Gordon, Jr., CCE. “It’s encouraging to see our members thinking proactively about how to serve pet families with both compassion and innovation.”

In response to strong attendee feedback, the ICCFA and the PLPA are expanding next year’s program to a three-day format, returning to the Emory Conference Center Hotel in Atlanta. The 2026 PLPA Pet Loss & Integration Short Course will take place July 17–20, 2026.

In the past month part of my thoughts have been at the intersection of “Education and Grief”.  And, it has brought me to a way of thinking that maybe the two thoughts need to go together.

You see, during my time as a Board Member of the University of Minnesota I worked to try to get a student-led initiative about having a class on “Financial Literacy” become part of the base, required core of curriculum courses that every student needed to graduate.  It came from a foundation in which students told me, and I’m paraphrasing here, “The University does a great job preparing us to go out in the world and make a great living, but nobody tells us how to manage the income that we earn”.

I came to the conclusion that if we taught students about taxes, interest, mortgages, automobile payments, savings plans, and more we would have a society not only where citizens were more apt to make wise financial decisions but people would be much more aware of how the votes they cast in elections affect their purchasing power and financial future.

I recently made a call to the Provost (the position in charge of the academic side of the college) who was in her last week on the job.  I had helped hire her and got to know her when I was the Chair of the (Academic) Mission Committee for two years.  I had asked her how Financial Literacy had fared in the new curriculum proposals and she let me know that the entire proposal had been voted down by faculty. . . . So, my Financial Literacy ideas for students were back to square zero.

On to grief. . . . As many of you might know, in roughly the last month the past Speaker of the House in Minnesota, Rep. Melissa Hortman, was assasinated.  I can’t say I was a friend of the Speaker or that I even knew her well.  However, University of Minnesota Board Members are selected by the legislature and getting known by them helps one’s chances for success.

I remember encountering Rep. Hortman in a stairwell at the State Office Building.  I wanted to get an appointment with her to push my candidacy and she said something like the following to me, “No need, I’ve read your bio and heard from others. . . I’ll be voting for you”. . . and, she ended up doing so.

So, while we probably didn’t have the same political ideals I can say she was honest, forthright, and ethical in her short discussion with me.  When I heard of the assasination news that moment in the stairwell immediately came back to me and shook me to the soul.

Recently a letter to the editor on the grief of the Hortman assasination was printed in the Minnesota Star and Tribune.  The writer said, “I am grieving a country that has become numb to cruelty.  A nation where the capacity to care is treated as a partisan liability.  Where empathy is mocked, where decency is dismissed as weakness and where powerful. . .are met not with respect but with violence.”

So, here I am — at the intersection of education and grief.  It’s not a position unique to me and former President of the National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD) in Great Britain, John Adams, finds himself at the same spot.  I had the opportunity to sit down with Mr. Adams at the United States NFDA convention in Baltimore in 2022 and learn more about his goals.

One of those goals is to unite education and grief by making a course on Death, Dying, and Bereavement a required course in the British National Curriculum.  To that end he has already had an audience with King Charles and last December addressed the Members of Parliament on the subject where he received very positive responses.  Here’s the latest update on what is happening with his initiative.

Back to Financial Literacy — I won’t give up on my quest to get more people to understand the value of knowing finances and the ramifications in one’s life on how they manage their finances.  Matter of fact, I think in the world we live in there should be a lot more room to learn the “soft sciences” like bereavement and/or financial literacy.

Maybe if we can help with that eduaction our communities can understand the value of empathy and grieve with compassion when we lose our friends and neighbors. . . . And, maybe like John Adams in Great Britain funeral directors, who exhibit that “capacity to care” can lead the way.

I think it is a real longshot and we are a long way from proclaiming that the funeral is back in American culture.  However, a couple of indicators show that Generation Z, those who are in today’s age bracket of between 13 and 28 years of age, may be yearning for a life that is in tune with an almost bygone generation, at least when it comes to church and funerals.

First of all, at last year’s National Funeral Directors Convention in New Orleans NFDA Executive Director Christine Pepper gave attendees a primer on the NFDA’s research project titled “Changing Consumer Preferences: A Generational Perspective on Attitudes Toward Funeral Service”.  One of the surprising results she shared with us was that of Generation Z which apparently had better opinions of funerals and traditional burial than the generations that were born before them.

Then just last week I read this article from the USA Today titled “Not just at Easter.  Gen Z is returning to Christianity“.  That article goes on to tell us that the men of the Gen Z generation are returning to church which appears to be stopping a trend of 30 years of decline in the question of Americans who identify as Christian.

The decline of church membership in America

For those three decades of data the overwhelming statistic has been the rise of the term “Nones” to identify those that have no religious affilitation.  According to the article, the “Nones” have led this decline in religious affilition for the past thirty years. . . .but now that decline is stopping, at least temporarily.

As the author of the article states, “Overall, younger generations are more spiritually curious. Barna research group reports that most Gen Z teens are interested in learning more about Jesus, with younger cohorts leading the way in the growth of new commitments. . . .At the same time, the dramatic rise of the nones appears to be leveling off. Sociologist Ryan Burge recently observed that the share of non-religious Americans has stopped rising in any meaningful way − a surprising pause after 30 years of growth”. 

The author also makes the following comments, “It’s too soon to announce a change to the direction of secularism, but as someone who has been an observer of Christian trends for decades, including a stint leading a Christian research organization, I’ve never seen anything like this. . . .  I did not expect it to change this quickly”.

Again, the author partially concludes with this thought, “So, it’s not time to call this a revival. But something is stirring in the data − in the culture”. 

So, from my perspective that does somewhat jive with the data that NFDA found in their consumer survey.  I would conclude that any movement back to traditional casketed funerals is far from certain, even saying that the possibility is remote. . . . .However, as the author of the USA Today article stated, “. . . .something is stirring in the data – in the culture”.

Who Will Lead NFDA? Meet the 2025 NFDA Election Candidates

A couple of recent articles that I read give an indication of how the financial success of cemeteries can vary based on location and/or the clientele that may be using the cemetery.

I’m from the state of Minnesota and more specifically an area outside of the metropolitan Minneapolis/St. Paul demographic market.  My area of Minnesota was settled in the last half of the 19th Century by immigrants most generally from the Scandinavian countries of Norway, Sweden, and Finland.  These pioneers received their government allotment of land, began farming and immediately established small communities centered on the church.

Most of these churches were positioned so that they were within about 30 minutes of a horse-drawn buggy ride of the agricultural family members. That close proximity to members eventually led to hundreds, maybe thousands, of these low number of member churches dotting the countryside of Minnesota.  And, I’m guessing, that modus operandi for setting up church locations was probably followed in all rural areas as America grew westward.

Each of these churches also, because of necessity, had a cemetery that grew around that church for the next 150 years.  Today, however, especially with the advent of transportation and family farms becoming larger corporate farms the need for these country churches has waned.  My mother’s church, where my maternal grandparents are buried, closed two years ago. . . .but the cemetery is still there.  The cemetery has virtually no new graves being sold. . . but it does require some funding to be available to fund upkeep of the grounds.

Contrast that with the cemeteries which began, again because of necessity, in what have become large metropolitan areas.  They generally covered many acres and served many different churches from the metropolitan areas.  While cremation has taken its toll on grave space sales and interment fees these cemeteries have been able to continue to grow, and in many cases thrive, because of the optionality that they can offer.

By optionality, I mean mausoleums, cremation niches, crematories on site, and in many cases the availabilty of venues for services. . . . even the growing trend to host weddings.  In other words, they give these cemeteries a potential ability to raise revenue.  As a matter of fact, Service Corporation International CEO Thomas Ryan made this comment in the company’s 2nd Quarter 2024 Earnings Call, “. . we continue to see long-term strength in our premium cemetery inventory and sales production.”

Recently I’ve seen articles that focus on privately owned community area cemeteries that are trying to offer more optionality via the idea of installing their own cremation equipment. . . . equipment that would either be used as a trade service for funeral homes without their own crematory or, possibly, to enter the cremation disposition business going directly to the consumer and competing against local funeral homes.

One cemetery operator, Troy Nikola,who owns the Princeton Memorial Park and Mausoleum in Robbinsville, New Jersey, is one cemetery operator who wants to install his own crematory.  Here’s what he says according to this article from the New Jersey Monitor, “The rising cremation rate presents a serious challenge. One of my cemeteries, for example, has seen new grave sales decline by 90% from 100 grave sales per year to just 10 grave sales per year. Burial services have dropped by 50% from 120 services a year to 60. And this shift threatens the long-term financial viability of cemeteries. . . .If cemeteries are not allowed to adapt, such as by operating their own crematories within the cemeteries, they will struggle to survive.” 

Here’s another article from Decatur, Georgia, where a cemetery operator has indicated an interest in building and operating a crematory in his cemetery.  In a letter to the cemetery neighbors he makes this statement indicating that he would like more options for consumers at the cemetery, “Today, three in five Americans choose cremation, and this trend is expected to continue rising in the coming years. As a result, many of the families we serve at Washington have asked us to provide an all-in-one location where they can make cemetery, funeral, and cremation arrangements—in a place they know and trust.”

Funeral Director Daily take — “Owners want optionality for consumers, cemetery neighbors worry about the environment” —-  If you read both of those article you will notice that there does not seem to be any issues of the consumer public against having more choice in their options.  However, there is a great deal of concern by neighbors that crematories that operate near residential areas or schools need to provide a clean air environment in the neighborhood.  And, at least among neighbors, that continues to be a bigger issue than the ability of, in some cases, century old businesses to modernize their consumer selections.

And even while cemeteries were probably located in the area first I don’t see it getting any easier to build crematories in densely populated areas in the future.  Depending on the population size of the market area cemeteries may find their best money-making alternatives in the mausoleum and columbarium markets.

Lead with Purpose: Apply for NFDA’s National Emerging Leaders Program Today

Brookfield, Wis. – The National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) has begun accepting applications for the 2025-26 National Emerging Leaders Program. Since its inception, this transformative program has nurtured 58 funeral service professionals, equipping them with the skills, knowledge and confidence to excel as leaders in their funeral homes, communities, and the funeral service profession at state and national levels. 

This comprehensive year-long leadership experience will empowers 20 select participants to lead with vision, integrity and influence, providing them with tools and strategies to inspire and guide others. Additionally, participants will benefit from mentorship opportunities and high-level networking with leaders in the funeral service profession. 

The 2025-25 program will begin with a retreat at NFDA headquarters in Brookfield, Wisconsin, June 22-24, and conclude during the 2026 NFDA Leadership Conference. Participants will engage in approximately seven virtual learning sessions throughout the year, featuring insights from both funeral service experts and distinguished leaders from outside the profession. 

The NFDA National Emerging Leaders Program is open to all licensed funeral professionals in the United States and Canada – regardless of NFDA membership status – who are in the early stages of their careers (first-career funeral directors licensed at least three years or second-career funeral directors licensed at least one year).
