Imagine it is lunch time at the funeral home you work at when you get a call from the hospital two miles away that you need to immediately bring the best casket you have to the hospital.  And, by the way, it is for the President of the United States.

That’s the call that Vernon B. O’Neal of O’Neal’s Funeral Home received on November 22, 1963 — 62 years ago last Saturday.  O’Neal happened to be the only person at the funeral home at the time and selected his top of the line unit —  a $3,995 (1963 prices) solid-bronze casket made by the Elgin Casket Company.  The other problem that O’Neal had is that casket weighed 400 pounds and he was by himself at the funeral home.

Editors Note:  This is our annual re-run of the Funeral Director Daily article of November 22, 2021. . . . .Saturday, November 22, 2025, represented the 62nd anniverssary of when American President John F. Kennedy was assasinated.  Historians are still trying to piece together all of the issues that led to the shooting that day.  There is also a story of the caskets that were used for President Kennedy’s transportation and burial. . . This is that story.

According to this incredible article which gives much of the “behind the scenes” work on President John F. Kennedy’s post-mortem care, O’Neal eventually got three more people to help him get the casket to Parkland Hospital.

I would suggest you read the article. . . if you were living at the time it will bring back memories.  If you were not living back then, you will see decisions made in a much more innocent world that had not even contemplated this situation.

For me, I was a 5-year old recuperating from a childhood surgery and playing in front of the television at home.  I saw the news report come across the screen and remember going into the kitchen where dad, who was home for lunch, and mom were at the table.  I can distinctly remember giving them the news of the President’s death that I had just heard on our black and white television monitor.

Here’s a little chronology, according to the article,  of what happened when O’Neal arrived at Parkland Hospital with the casket:

• O’Neal was met by the Secret Service and some Kennedy aides

• O’Neal and the emergency room nurses placed Kennedy in the casket (this casket was to be used for transport and no death care preparations had been done with the President)

• A disagreement ensued as the Secret Service and Kennedy’s aides were ready to bring the casket to Air Force 1.  The disagreement was between the Federal employees and the Dallas County Medical Examiner and a Justice of the Peace brought to the hospital to secure order.  Believe it or not, in 1963 there was not a Federal crime on the books for assassinating the President.  Because of such, Dallas County officials felt that the President’s potential murder case should be adjudicated in Dallas County and wanted an autopsy done there before allowing the body to leave Texas.

• According to the article, the Secret Service and other Federal employees forcibly made their way to the waiting Air Force 1 where the casket was lifted into the passenger section of the plane for the flight back to Washington, DC.

• Upon landing in Washington, DC, the President (and transport casket) was brought to Bethesda Naval Hospital in a Navy Ambulance for an autopsy.

• At Bethesda Naval Hospital the President was prepared for burial by members of Gawler’s  Funeral Home and placed in a $3,610 Marsellus casket made of African mahogany.  According to the article, a rosary was placed in the President’s hands.  Again, according to the article, the President’s brother and United States Attorney General Robert Kennedy made the decision, backed by the President’s wife, Jacqueline, to have a closed casket rather than an open casket.

While that story is interesting and historical. . . . .the question did remain for some time, “What happened to the original bronze casket that encased the President’s mortal remains from Dallas to Washington, DC?  It wasn’t until the summer of 1998 that archives were released that let the public know of its whereabouts.

So, piecing from this article and other articles written after information was released from the National Archives in 1998, here’s what happened to the casket.

President John F. Kennedy

First of all, Gawler’s Funeral Home in Washington, DC, stored the Dallas bronze casket in a warehouse.  In January 1964 O’Neal’s Funeral Home in Dallas billed the federal government in the amount of  $3,995 (according to the article, the federal government felt that this was an excessive price and negotiated a $500 discount from that listed and billed price) for the casket but it is believed that O’Neal preferred just to have the casket back in his possession.  It has been rumored that collector’s were willing to pay O’Neal upwards of $100,000 if he were to sell them the casket.

The federal government paid $3,160 as a paid in full price of the casket (taking an additional 10% discount off the negotiated price) to O’Neal and the General Services Administration took possession of the casket.  And while the House of Representatives passed a bill to preserve all evidence in the Kennedy assassination for evidentiary value, Congressman Earle Cabell from Texas argued that the casket had no evidentiary value and should be destroyed.

The Kennedy family agreed with Congressman Cabell and Attorney General Nicholas Katzenbach agreed that the United States government had the right to dispose of it in a suitable manner.  Here, verbatim, is what the linked article says happened next:

“. . . On February 18, 1966, several members of the Air Force picked the casket up from a secure building at the National Archives just a few blocks from the White House. The casket was placed in an Air Force truck and transported to Andrews Air Force Base — the very place that the casket had originally landed in Washington with President Kennedy inside of it less than three years earlier. At Andrews, the Air Force team from the 93rdAir Terminal Squadron loaded the coffin on to a C130 transport plane.

To dispose of the casket, the Air Force had decided to take it to a place that JFK had once considered being buried: the Atlantic Ocean. Kennedy loved the sea and was said to have considered being buried at sea when he died. Of course, we know that Kennedy was buried at Arlington National Cemetery instead, but for many reasons, the Atlantic Ocean was the perfect place for the disposal of the casket that had brought him back to Washington following his assassination.

The Air Force wanted to ensure the integrity of the casket and not allow it to become a souvenir by someone who happened to come across it floating in the ocean or washing up on the shore. The C130 flew about 100 miles east of Washington, D.C. and descended to about 500 feet above the water. Before taking off, the Air Force had drilled over 40 holes into the casket and filled it with three 80-pound sandbags. It was also secured inside of a wooden crate and sealed shut in a manner so that it wouldn’t break apart upon hitting the water.

At approximately 10:00 AM, the C130’s tail hatch was opened and the casket was pushed out of the aircraft. Parachutes softened its fall and the coffin began to sink instantly. The airplane circled the drop zone for about 20 minutes to make sure that the coffin didn’t resurface, but they had no reason to worry. The Air Force had chosen an area of the Atlantic that saw very little air or sea traffic, and the casket settled in about 9,000 feet of water. The Kennedy Family was relieved that they no longer had to worry about a bloody casket going on display somewhere for the “morbidly curious”.”

So, there you have it.  An explanation of how the President’s body left Dallas in a bronze casket and he was buried in a hardwood casket.  I found it very interesting that over the years people did not pick up on that and ask more questions about it.  That, in itself, is probably reflective of the simpler, and more trusting, times we lived in back then.

In a new world order that includes cremation, alkaline hydrolysis, and natural organic reduction it is sometimes forgotten that over 1 million caskets are sold in the United States every year.  To that discussion we will bring you some news from a couple of casket companies today.

Batesville, long known for its casket products, is continuing their transition to a total solutions company for funeral homes.  To that end they are introducing their “Remembrance Store” which will be a co-branded turnkey e-commerce storefront designed to generate incremental revenue streams for funeral homes.

According to this recent press release from Batesville,  “families are increasingly turning to outside providers and often shopping online for urns, remembrance jewelry, keepsakes, and other memorial products, leaving funeral homes vulnerable to both lost revenue and relationships”.

According to that press release:

• 58% of pre-need and 64% of at-need families researched funeral products such as urns and jewelry online, highlighting a need for shoppable digital resources consumers can access prior to contacting the funeral home.

• 30% of families buy urns before contacting a funeral home.

• 38% of pre-need and 37% of at-need consumers purchased remembrance products through Amazon.

• 32% of pre-need and 36% of at-need families consider shopping online to be a more ideal place to purchase memorialization products vs. only 20% at funeral homes.

Batesville’s “Remembrance Store”  will give families who prefer to shop online the convenience of purchasing through their trusted funeral home, which would allow funeral homes to capture that online revenue that may be going to other sources at this time.

Private Label Caskets, operating out of Indianapolis, Indiana, recently posted the following notice to their website:

Another Announcement ––  While we didn’t see it as a press release on the Batesville website we did receive the following notice from Batesville on their Facebook page which appeared on our Facebook scroll on October 28:

“We’re honored that Private Label has chosen Batesville as their recommended domestic supplier for their customers.  In times of change, we believe strength comes from partnership — and we’re committed to making this transition seamless for every funeral home they serve.  At Batesville, we’re proud to honor the tradition that defines this profession while driving the transformation prepares it for the future.”

Funeral Director Daily take:  The National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) recently released this report which predicts that traditional burial in a casket will drop from today’s selection rate of 33.2% to approximately 13.0% –  a number that is lower than was originally thought —  by 2045.

We question what that might mean for casket companies in raw numbers.  Here’s some available statistics and some projected ideas that may give meaning to that answer.

In 2024, the United States reported approximately 3.1 million deaths with a 33.2% burial rate.  Extrapolating those numbers would mean that about 1,029,000 caskets were needed for those burials.

In 2050, projections tell us that the United States will grow to about 380 million people and the death rate per thousand people will grow from today’s level of about 9.06 deaths per 1,000 people to about 10.3 deaths per 1,000 people because of an “older average age”.  Projections tell us extrapolating those numbers would bring about a raw number death total of about 3.9 million residents.  At a 13.0% casket useage that would mean that about 507,000 caskets would be needed for those deaths.

1950 = 148 million, 2010 = 309 million, 2025 = 343 million

So, if those population, death rate, and disposition projections hold up over the next two decades you can see that only about 1/2 of the caskets used today will be needed in 2050.  If those numbers hold up there will probably be casket company consolidations and, as Batesville is doing, branching of the company into other segments.

Trying to be a “BTC” (Business to Consumer) casket company has been tried before and even with great effort the cause was difficult.  However, the people at Titan Casket must relate to the Curtis Mayfield tune “Keep on Keeping On” as they seem to be moving one step forward all the time and growing as a company.

Not only are they selling more caskets to the traditional funeral consumer but they are gaining disciples among funeral homes joining their funeral home partnership (which you can learn about here).  In addition, I recently learned of their new venture helping consumers weave the sometimes tangled path of available funeral and cremation options available to consumers.   The company has formed the Titan Concierge division and hired proficient funeral service experts to handle this task.  You can learn about Titan Concierge here.

The people at Titan have added Titan Concierge which will help consumers from “Start to Finish” coordinating logistics with funeral homes and service providers.  From perusing the Titan Concierge website it appears that this service is available for $199.

Funeral Director Daily take:  As a retired funeral director and funeral home owner the growth of Titan has been very interesting to me.  I was never very bullish that a company that deals over the internet and by phone could succeed in such a personal business as Death Care.  However, the founders of Titan Casket, some of whom have experience as Amazon executives, have proved to me that internet sales can work for all types of items.  (As an aside here, I’m also continuously amazed by my many winter neighbors in Florida who buy their cars onlive via Carvana — every week it seems that the Carvana delivery vehicle is pulling into our neighborhood).

So, I don’t think the internet sale of caskets sounds odd to anybody anymore.  And, I’ve told more than one enterprising company in the Death Care business that if they are interested in online sales they should look to Titan Casket and their ability to capture consumers as a roadmap.

A little bit “Edgy” —  I guess don’t knock what is working, however,  as an “old-style, old-fashioned” funeral director some of the ways that Titan has reached the American consumer looks a little edgy to me. . . . .but it evidently is working.  Ad Age recently took  note of the company’s “Heavenly Guarantee” of their merchandise.

No, nope, not ok

Pretty much every aspect of Pope Francis’s visitation and funeral has been uber-scrutinized, so it’s no surprise that mourners who stopped at the coffin to TAKE A SELFIE with the late pontiff drew lots of attention. First, because phones weren’t supposed to be allowed in the Basilica, and secondly, because it’s just not cool. After these complaints, guards began enforcing their phone policy, only allowing photos outside the building.

A home run

A New York nonprofit needs $2500 to restore a historic cemetery, so they’re hoping that their latest fundraiser will not only raise that amount, but also unite even the worst of enemies — Mets and Yankees fans, to be exact. The founders of Gravestone Guardians are raffling off tickets to this year’s Subway Series, the annual event that pits the New York Mets against their rivals, the New York Yankees. Just a $10 donation to the effort to restore St. Mary of the Snow Graveyard could be just the ticket — literally. The drawing is set for April 30, so … good luck!

Same old, same old

The prison sentences of Megan Hess and her mom Shirley Koch, the disgraced former owners of Sunset Mesa Funeral Directors in Colorado who were convicted in 2022 of charges stemming from illegally selling body parts, will not be altered from their original maximum 20- and 15-year stints after all. Although these sentences were vacated in July 2024 after a district court found that the recommending sentencing guidelines weren’t followed in the original trial, last week both were resentenced to the exact same terms by the appeals court.

Little entrepreneur

What were you doing when you were 10 years old? Chances are you weren’t cleaning gravestones, or even running your own business. But a 10-year-old UK boy has turned his passion of cleaning graves into a business, offering 10% of his earnings to a charity that provides headstones for families who can’t afford them. “Cleaning graves gets me off PS5” video games, he said in a recent interview. 

New Colorado bill

The atrocities that took place at Sunset Mesa and Return to Nature prompted Colorado lawmakers to strengthen their state’s deathcare regulations, beginning with new laws, passed in 2024, regarding licensing for funeral directors and inspections at funeral homes. Now a new bill, if passed, will add to that body of legislation by making it a crime for anyone to abuse preneed funds.

An Austin, Texas funeral home owner has been charged with abuse of the corpse and tampering with government records after a former employee complained of criminal conduct at the facility. In addition to falsifying information on death certificates, the 50-year-old owner allegedly conducted “experiments” on severed body parts prior to cremation, injecting some with embalming fluid asking her employees to “study” the “effects […] with and without formaldehyde.” The owner has bonded out of jail, but awaits a court hearing on May 9, during which she promises to add “context” to the allegations.
